For too long, New York has failed our kids, but the police, the courts, and our government are beginning to listen – thanks to citizens, advocate groups, and many brave victims. Here’s how to add your voice, change the conversation, and create a safer New York.
SUPPORT THE NEW YORK CHILD VICTIMS ACT?
The vast majority of child sexual abuse victims never report it. The vast majority of those who do wait until their 40s to speak up. In far too many cases, the trauma of understanding and processing what happened results in alcohol and drug abuse, depression, suicide and other mental and physical issues that cost millions to treat – money according to a recent New York Times editorial, “that should be paid not by taxpayers, but by the offenders and the institutions that cover for them.”
A coalition of New York child sex abuse survivors strongly recommends enacting the Child Victims Act, which would:
Eliminate the statute of limitations for bringing civil and criminal cases against perpetrators
enable survivors of child sexual abuse to retroactively file civil suit
The movement is gathering momentum, and media have taken notice state- and nationwide. Learn what NY Loves Kids co-founder Bridie Farrell and other advocates and experts are saying about the issue and impact of child sexual abuse – and how we can make our communities safer.
